Seated cross-legged among a row of musicians on stage, Jagruti Gandhi sees that her teenage student waiting in the wings is ready. Then she pats her knee softly to set the beat.
The dancer walks out, and the biggest event of her young life – her Arangetram – begins.
Gandhi, 49, doesn’t think about the years of practice leading up to the event or about the last two months the student practically lived at her Mission Viejo house, consumed by perfection of Bharata Natyam, a form of Indian classical dance.
She thinks only of keeping the beat, keeping the whole show together.
To do so, she plays the talam, a 2-inch-wide cymbal she taps against a larger disk.
The sharp metallic beats guide the dancer’s feet. A soft one is a heel tap, a loud one a foot stomp.

“Arangetram” is a Sanskrit word pronounced ah-rong-GAY-traum.
It means “entering the stage” and is the name for the first solo recital a Bharata Natyam dancer
